Philosophy

Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

The pursuit of wisdom can lead you wherever you go.

Pursue wisdom through reasoning and critical reflection about the most fundamental beliefs and principles that underlie our understanding of the world and ourselves. Engage in disciplined reflection about matters that concern every human being.

As a Philosophy major, you expand your ability to reflect on life, relationships, self and the environment in ways that are personally fulfilling and make our lives more meaningful. Philosophy investigates questions at the foundation of almost every branch of human knowledge, including science, religion, politics, morality, human nature, the nature of reality and the very possibility of knowledge.

By delving into the most basic aspects of the world around them, philosophy majors improve themselves as human beings while developing strong critical reasoning, logic, problem solving, close reading, written and oral communication, ethical awareness and communication skills — significant assets to any profession.

Philosophy Program Highlights

  • Choose a track for your future. In addition to the traditional philosophical studies curriculum, FSU’s philosophy program has options to follow a law school preparation track or a social justice track, giving you curricula specially designed to advance the most popular areas of vocational and personal interest for majors.

  • Take part in experiential education with several courses that involve fun and highly engaging live-action role-playing games designed for college courses that immerse students in pivotal moments in history such as the trial of Socrates or the trial of Galileo. You will learn about transformative ideas by debating them from the perspective of historical characters who had a stake in those ideas.

  • Double major in Criminal and Legal Studies and Philosophy, with Dual-Degree Option. FSU’s Criminal and Legal Studies and programs have partnered with University of Baltimore School of Law to design a pathway for you to gain early entry to law school, earning both a bachelor’s and a law degree in six years instead of seven.

  • Study with inspirational, dedicated and supportive faculty who are experts in their fields and care about their students.

Philosophy majors consistently earn high test scores on standardized tests including the GRE, GMAT and LSAT, have high rates of admission to graduate and professional schools, and often end up pursuing graduate degrees. Law school is the most common next step for philosophy graduates, and philosophy is well-known to be especially excellent preparation for law school and careers in law. In addition, philosophy graduates go on to a wide variety of careers that involve critical thinking, logical analysis, careful reading and interpretation, problem solving, speaking and writing, or an ethical or social justice dimension. Common career fields include law, government and politics, investigation/intelligence, business, writing and publishing, public speaking and performance, research/analyst, religion and activism.

What You'll Learn

You will develop a set of dispositions and skills that characterize a liberally educated person -- wonder, intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, moral awareness, critical thinking, problem solving, analysis, writing, speaking and listening. You will also learn to think critically about your own beliefs and underlying assumptions as well as the beliefs and values of our society. Get ready to be confronted with hard questions about science, religion, morality and knowledge in general. Giving people permission and practice thinking for themselves means you don’t have to be swept along by other people’s values and agendas; it frees you to choose what kind of person you will become.
